ADRIAN, Mich. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's ice hockey team fell, 4–1, to No. 4 Adrian on the road Friday night. With the loss, the Falcons move to 9–11–1 on the season.
The contest remained scoreless through the opening 20 minutes before the Bulldogs struck twice in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Concordia Wisconsin responded with sustained pressure late in the frame, firing six shots over a four-minute span, three of which were on goal, but was unable to break through.
Adrian added two more goals in the third period, but the Falcons refused to go quietly. After a battle along the boards near the Bulldogs' net, the Royal Blue and Gray set up an offensive sequence. A wide shot created an opportunity for sophomore
Connor Van Weelie (Mississauga, Ont.) to collect the puck and dish it to junior
Riley Klugerman (Aurora, Ont.). Klugerman found senior
Mason Ausmus (Saline, Mich.), who buried the puck past the Adrian goaltender to prevent the shutout. The goal marked Ausmus' first of the season and the sixth of his collegiate career.
Sophomore goaltender
Cameron Hrdlicka (Calgary, Wis.) made 26 saves in the loss. Defensively, junior
Logan Kroyman (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), freshman
Cooper Brown (Airdrie, Alta.), and sophomore
Jack Guvenal (Georgetown, Ont.) each recorded a blocked shot.
Van Weelie led CUW offensively with five shots, while freshman
Matt Green (Barrie, Ont.) added three shots, all on goal. At the faceoff dot, junior
Sawyer Wirsing (Arundel, Maine) and sophomore
Levi Carter (Keremeos, B.C.) paced the Falcons with six wins apiece.
Concordia Wisconsin played a disciplined game, committing just two penalties for four minutes, both coming in the first period.
The Falcons will return to the ice Saturday to close the series against the Bulldogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET at Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Mich.
