MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Benedictine in its NACC opener Thursday night. The Falcons move to 0-10 overall on the season.
Benedictine controlled the opening set, but CUW responded with strong efforts in the final two frames. In the second, the Eagles built an early 9-6 lead before the Falcons answered with a six-point run. Three Benedictine errors helped fuel the surge, while sophomore
Parker Butterfass (Shakopee, Minn.) recorded two service aces during the stretch. Sophomore
Owen Kolozsy finished the run with a kill off a Butterfass assist to give CUW the advantage.
The teams traded points until Benedictine created separation late to take a 24-19 lead. Concordia Wisconsin closed within three, but the deficit proved too large as the Falcons fell 25-21.
CUW battled again in the third set, staying nearly point-for-point with the visitors. The Falcons produced their most efficient offense of the night, hitting a match-best .353 with 15 assists and just three errors. Sophomore
Reid Scott (Chandler, Ariz.) tallied eight kills in the frame and added the team's lone block of the match. Defensively, CUW limited Benedictine to a .270 hitting percentage with six errors. A late Eagles push, however, secured the sweep.
Scott led the Falcons with 14 kills while hitting .313. Butterfass added seven kills at a .385 clip and accounted for both CUW service aces. Sophomore setter
Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.) dished out 25 assists. Kolozsy and senior
Tate Miller (Antehm, Ariz.) paced the defense with six digs apiece.
The Falcons return to action Saturday at Marian. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Sadoff Gymnasium in Fond du Lac, Wis.
