Vrana, Knutson Record Hat Tricks in 13–3 Win at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's lacrosse team earned a 13–3 victory over Kalamazoo College in its first road contest of the season. The win avenged last year's home loss to the Hornets and gave the Falcons a 2–1 edge in the all-time series. CUW improves to 2–0 on the year.

Kalamazoo opened the scoring, but Concordia Wisconsin answered with two late first-quarter goals. Junior Bryce Peterson (Waukesha, Wis.) tied the game off an assist from freshman Blane Vrana (Monument, Colo.), before Vrana scored with help from freshman Brayden Wilson (Pueblo West, Colo.) to give CUW a 2–1 lead after one.

The Falcons extended their advantage early in the second quarter, as sophomore Jackson Knutson (Roseville, Minn.) and Wilson each found the net within the opening four minutes. After a turnover led to a Kalamazoo goal, CUW responded with three straight scores. Vrana and freshman Kaleb Weikel (Andover, Minn.) struck less than a minute apart to force a Hornets timeout, and Wilson added an unassisted tally to send the Falcons into halftime ahead 7–2.

Concordia wasted no time in the second half, scoring a man-up goal just 10 seconds in when senior Preston Meier (Owatonna, Minn.) set up Knutson. Kalamazoo answered a minute later, but the Falcons closed the third quarter with two more goals, including Vrana's third of the game to secure his first career hat trick.

The Royal Blue and Gray shut out the Hornets in the final period while adding two more scores, capped by Knutson's third goal to complete his first career hat trick and the 13–3 final.

Wilson paced the offense with four assists, while Weikel and Vrana each placed five shots on goal. Senior Frank Trewyn (Mukwonago, Wis.) controlled possession at the faceoff, winning 11 of 16 draws. Defensively, junior Ben Birch (Grafton, Wis.), senior Connor Quill (Schaumburg, Wis.), and junior Sean McMullen (Truckee, Calif.) each caused two turnovers.

Freshman goalkeeper Connor Jackson (Potomac, Md.) earned the win with seven saves on 10 shots faced.

The Falcons will return to Fitting Field on Wednesday, Feb. 25, for a non-conference match-up against North Central. Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
