RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's volleyball team defeated Concordia University Chicago, 3-1, in a midweek conference matchup. With the victory, the Falcons remain undefeated against the Cougars, winning all seven meetings in the series. CUW improves to 3-14 overall and 3-5 in NACC play.
The Falcons controlled the opening set, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead capped by a kill from sophomore
Parker Butterfass (Shakopee, Minn.) that forced a Cougar timeout. CUW continued its offensive push and secured the set 25-18. During the frame, the Falcons recorded 12 kills with just two errors while holding CUC to nine kills and forcing six attack errors.
The second set was tightly contested. Despite CUW posting 15 kills in the frame, the Cougars edged out the Falcons to even the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, CUC rallied to tie the score at 18-18 before CUW called a timeout. The break proved effective, as the Falcons responded with three consecutive points, including kills from senior
Chase Ammons (Elm Grove, Wis.) and sophomore
Owen Kolozsy (Carol Stream, Ill.). The Cougars answered with three straight points of their own to cut the deficit to 23-21, but back-to-back CUC attack errors – the final one forced by a Butterfass solo block – sealed the set for the Falcons.
The Cougars held the advantage for much of the fourth set until CUW battled back to tie the score at 19-19. The teams traded points down the stretch before the Falcons used a timeout while holding a narrow 24-23 lead. Following the break, Kolozsy delivered a kill that prompted a CUC timeout. Ammons followed with a kill, and Butterfass closed the match with a service ace to give CUW the set and the victory.
Kolozsy led the Falcons with 16 kills and 14 digs for his sixth double-double of the season. Senior
Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.) also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, both season highs, marking his second of the year. Ammons added 10 kills while hitting .444 and contributed defensively with both of CUW's solo blocks and a block assist.
Sophomore setter
Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.) guided the Falcons' offense with 46 assists and added 13 digs, earning his third consecutive double-double and giving CUW three double-doubles in the match.
Freshmen
Drew Nelson (Oak Creek, Wis.) and
Cooper Dammann (Altadena, Calif.) shared libero duties, with Nelson finishing with seven digs.
The Falcons return to action Saturday when they host a non-conference matchup against Maranatha Baptist. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the R. John Buuck Field House.
