Falcons Flourish in Final Non-Conference Match

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's volleyball team closed out non-conference play on a high note Saturday afternoon. The Falcons improved to 4-14 on the season with a dominant 25-15, 25-10, 25-11 sweep.

The Falcons were propelled by a 7-0 run behind the serve of sophomore Hayden Hurley (Gilbert, Ariz.) in the opening set and never looked back. The Birds led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 25-15 victory, hitting an impressive .407 while recording five service aces. Sophomore Ryan Burris (Avon, Ind.) and freshman Matthew Gutierrez (Franklin, Wis.) each tallied their first career kills in the set.

Hurley's serve continued to set the tone in the second, helping Concordia jump out to a quick 5-0 lead. The Falcons soared to a 25-10 win to take a 2-0 match advantage. Freshmen Josh Valentine (Euless, Texas) and Jian Bacerdo (Oswego, Ill.) each recorded their first collegiate kills during the frame.

Maranatha grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the third set, but that would be its only advantage of the match. Concordia responded immediately and hit a blistering .500 in the set to seal the sweep. Owen Kolozsy powered the offense with six kills and a service ace in the final stanza.

Jian Bacerdo led all players with 11 kills while hitting an outstanding .562. In total, 10 different Falcons recorded at least one kill in the victory.

Defensively, Concordia doubled up Maranatha in digs, 30-15, with Josh Valentine leading the way with seven. At the net, the Falcons totaled seven blocks, paced by senior Chase Ammons (Elm Grove, Wis.) with four.

Hurley dished out a team-high 13 assists, while Logan Router added 11. The Falcons were aggressive from the service line all match, finishing with 13 aces, including four from Hurley.

Concordia returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when it hosts Dominican.
