Falcons Sweep Muskies in Thrilling Doubleheader

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin baseball team swept Lakeland University in a Wednesday afternoon NACC doubleheader at Kapco Park. The sweep marks the first time the Falcons have taken a series from the Muskies since the 2023 season after the teams split their last two series.

CUW improves to 8-10 overall and remains perfect in conference play at 4-0.

GAME 1 | Concordia Wisconsin 5, Lakeland 4
Lakeland struck first in the opener, scoring three runs in the top of the third to take an early lead that held until the Falcons rallied late.

In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on second and third, freshman Mick Vagner (Crown Point, Ind.) delivered a clutch two-RBI double into left field on the third pitch of the at-bat to tie the game. Sophomore Graham Kasten (Mequon, Wis.) followed with a go-ahead solo home run over the left-field fence, his fifth of the season, giving CUW a 4-3 advantage.

The Muskies tied the game in the top of the eighth, but the Falcons answered in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off.

Junior Alex Ames (Plymouth, Wis.) and Vagner were both hit by pitches to open the inning, setting the stage for Kasten. The senior came through once again, lining an RBI single into center field to score Ames and secure the 5-4 victory.

CUW recorded 10 hits in the contest, with Colyn Lessila, Ames, and Vagner each collecting doubles. Ames, junior Luke Heinkel (Brookfield, Wis.), and senior Brandon McCray (Corona, Calif.) each stole a base, while Vagner added two stolen bases.

Freshman Jack Stuck (Bayside, Wis.) made his fourth start of the season and pitched 7.1 strong innings, striking out eight while allowing just two walks. Freshman Russell Roodenburg (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned the win in relief, pitching the final 1.2 innings and striking out three Muskies to record his first collegiate victory.

GAME 2 | Concordia Wisconsin 10, Lakeland 9 (10 inn.)
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning.

Lakeland responded with a run in the third, but CUW answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Dylan Hein (Dyer, Ind.) launched a two-run home run over the right-field fence after junior Connor Lasch (Chicago, Ill.) opened the inning with a single. Senior Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) followed with a double, and consecutive sacrifice flies brought him home to extend the Falcon lead.

CUW added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Alex Ames.

Lakeland mounted a comeback late, scoring three runs in the seventh to close the gap. However, junior Jason Valdez (Glendale Heights, Ill.) answered with a solo home run to right field—his first of the season—to push the Falcons ahead 7-5.

The Muskies rallied again, tying the game at seven by the end of the ninth inning to force extra innings.

Lakeland scored two runs in the top of the 10th, but the Falcons responded in dramatic fashion. Sophomore Colyn Lessila (Germantown, Wis.) delivered a two-RBI double to center field to tie the game. Later in the inning, with two outs, a throwing error by the Lakeland shortstop on a ball hit by Valdez allowed Lessila to score the winning run and complete the sweep.

CUW collected 21 hits in game two. Ames and Lasch led the offensive effort with five hits each, while Ames finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate.

Freshman Preston Regnier (Yorkville, Wis.) made his fourth start of the season, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out six. Fellow freshman Isaac Ziegler (Post Falls, Idaho) provided 1.1 innings of relief before classmate Jackson Kobylarczyk (Jackson, Wis.) closed the game with three innings, earning the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Falcons return to Kapco Park on Saturday to host Dominican in another NACC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon, with game two set to follow at approximately 3 p.m.
