CUW Uses Fast Start to Power Past Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to seven games with a dominant 18-5 victory over Beloit on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. CUW has now won seven straight meetings against the Buccaneers and leads the all-time series 10-1.

The Falcons set the tone early, scoring seven goals in the opening quarter while holding Beloit to just two. CUW opened the game with three unanswered goals from freshmen Blane Vrana (Monument, Colo.) and Brayden Wilson (Pueblo West, Colo.), and sophomore Jackson Knutson (Roseville, Minn.). After Beloit responded with back-to-back scores, junior Bryce Petersen (Waukesha, Wis.) ignited a four-goal run to close the quarter and give the Falcons a commanding lead.

CUW's offense remained sharp in the second quarter, adding five goals while the defense held Beloit scoreless. Five different Falcons found the back of the net, including Knutson, Vrana, and Weikel, along with junior Ryan Svehla (Minooka, Ill.) and freshman Will Webber (Buffalo, Minn.). This was Svehla's first goal of the season.

The Falcons continued their control in the second half, scoring six more goals. Webber netted the first two of the half to secure his second collegiate hat trick, while sophomore Bryce Marval (Glenview, Ill.) added a pair and sophomore Will Downs (Northfield, Minn.) capped the scoring.

Seven Falcons recorded multiple goals, led by Webber's hat trick. Junior Tyler Husby (Eagan, Minn.) and Knutson each dished out two assists, while freshman Gaje Germundson (Nisswa, Minn.), senior Connor Quill (Schaumburg, Ill.), Webber, and Wilson added one apiece. Petersen paced the offense with 11 shots, including nine on goal.

Defensively, Svehla led the team with six ground balls as part of CUW's 45 total, while sophomore Eric Plasencia (Chula Vista, Calif.) added five and sophomore Kamil Dirilten (Wheaton, Ill.) collected four.

At the face-off X, the Falcons controlled possession, winning 17-of-26 draws. Senior Frank Trewyn (Mukwonago, Wis.) led the effort, going 7-for-10, while junior Jaxon Niemeyer (Tinly Park, Ill.) won six draws and sophomore Luke Swazey (Tucson, Ariz.) added three.

In goal, sophomore Nolan O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.) earned the win with four saves in the first half, while freshman Connor Jackson (Potomac, Md.) recorded five saves in the second half.
