MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's lacrosse team delivered a dominant performance Thursday at Fitting Field, defeating Marian and extending its winning streak to eight games. The contest was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to the threat of severe weather.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 14-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. The team has already secured a spot in the NACC Championship Tournament.
CUW controlled the game from the outset, scoring 13 unanswered goals, including six in the opening quarter. Junior
Bryce Petersen (Waukesha, Wis.) opened the scoring off an assist from freshman
Blane Vrana (Monument, Colo.), while sophomore
Jackson Knutson (Roseville, Minn.) recorded three first-quarter goals to secure his fifth hat trick of the season. Senior
Oliver Roa (Dunlap, Ill.) and Vrana also found the back of the net, with Roa tallying his first collegiate goal.
The Falcons continued their offensive surge in the second quarter, adding four more goals. Freshman
Kaleb Weikel (Andover, Minn.) and junior
Tyler Husby (Eagan, Minn.) each recorded their first goals of the game in the period.
CUW added three goals in the second half, with freshman
AJ Becker (Pleasanton, Calif.) netting his first collegiate goal in the third quarter. Freshmen
Ryan Maly (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and
Marko Adamovic (Park Ridge, Ill.) each scored in the fourth to round out the Falcons' scoring.
Freshman
Connor Jackson (Potomac, Md.) nearly recorded a shutout in just his second start of the season, allowing a goal in the final 30 seconds. The freshman made 11 saves, including six in the fourth quarter, and remains unbeaten at 2-0.
Knutson led the offense with four goals and an assist, while Weikel contributed one goal and three assists. The Falcons totaled 46 shots, placing 39 on goal, with Knutson leading the way with eight shots and six on target.
CUW also held a 39- ground ball advantage, led by sophomore
Eric Plasencia (Chula Vista, Calif.) with five and junior
Ben Birch (Grafton, Wis.) with four.
At the faceoff X, the Falcons went 11-of-18. Senior
Frank Trewyn (Mukwonago, Wis.) won five of nine draws, while junior
Jaxon Niemeyer (Tinley Park, Ill.) was a perfect 4-for-4. Freshman
Nathan Beyer (Duluth, Minn.) and Weikel also contributed wins.
Defensively, CUW caused 11 turnovers, with senior
Nathan Watt (South Bend, Ind.) leading the way with three. Eight additional Falcons recorded one caused turnover each.
The Falcons will close out the regular season home schedule Saturday against Edgewood. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the noon start.
