Falcons Use Strong Start to Down Lawrence 16-5

APPLETON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin women's lacrosse team earned a 16-5 road victory over Lawrence on Wednesday evening. The Falcons have now won both meetings against the Vikings since the program began last season. CUW improves to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in NACC play.

The Falcons started strong, scoring four goals in the opening quarter. Senior Katelyn Cardinale (Mount Laurel, N.J.) netted two goals and added an assist during the period, including a goal while the Falcons were playing man-down. Junior Carolyn Bourgeault (Buffalo, N.Y.) also found the net twice to help CUW build an early lead.

Bourgeault added another goal in the second quarter, while junior Emily Robertson (Canton, Mich.) scored twice. Lawrence managed one goal in each of the first two quarters, sending the Falcons into halftime with a 7-2 advantage.

The third quarter was quieter offensively, with both teams scoring just once in the final five minutes of the period. Sophomore Gretchen Paaverud (Ramsey, Minn.) recorded the Falcons' lone goal of the quarter with an assist from senior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.).

CUW opened the final quarter with two goals in a span of just 13 seconds. Lawrence responded with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 10-5 with 7:11 remaining. The Falcons quickly regained control, closing the game with six unanswered goals. Cardinale and Paaverud each scored on separate man-up opportunities, while senior Claire Geidel (Seward, Neb.) added her lone goal of the game with 15 seconds remaining.

Cardinale led the Falcons' offense with five goals and two assists, recording her ninth hat trick of the season. The senior also led the team with 10 shots, nine of which were on goal. Bourgeault tallied four goals for her second consecutive hat trick, while Robertson added three goals for her fourth straight hat trick.

CUW collected 27 ground balls in the contest, led by Robertson with six. Spejcher and Bourgeault each recorded four ground balls.

The Falcons won eight draw controls compared to Lawrence's 14. Cardinale led CUW with three draw control victories, while the Falcons were also awarded three draws due to Viking violations.

Junior Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ont.) made 10 saves in goal for the Falcons, including five in the third quarter. With the win, Cawthray improves to 6-5 on the season.

CUW will face Lake Forrest on Saturday for the two teams first match-up at Fitting Field. The Falcons look for redemption dropping both of games against the Foresters since the 2024 season. The game is set to begin at noon in Mequon, Wis.
