MEQUON, Wis. – Steve Anschutz has decided to step down as the Concordia University Wisconsin tennis head coach after 15 seasons leading the Falcons.
"Since 2012, it's been a privilege to serve CUW and our student-athletes," said Anschutz. "I'm grateful for our administration's trust, our staff's dedication and our teams' relentless commitment. A call from Rob Barnhill changed my life — he saw something in me, believed in me and helped shape our program with uncommon vision and care.
"To our student-athletes: Thank you for choosing CUW and trusting me to coach you. Our conference titles and NCAA appearances reflect a shared standard of excellence. I'm proud of what we built. There is still more to accomplish, and as I step aside, I'm focused on a smooth transition and cheering this program on."
Anschutz has led the women's program since the spring of 2012 and took over the men's team in 2015. Over more than a decade of NACC competition, his programs combined for a 176-31 conference record, capturing seven regular-season titles — five on the women's side and two with the men.
The women's team established itself as a dominant force under Anschutz, winning three consecutive NACC regular-season titles from 2015-16 through 2017-18 before securing back-to-back championships in 2022-23 and 2023-24. The Falcons also claimed six NACC Tournament championships in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024, earning NCAA Division III Tournament berths in each of those seasons.
The men's team rose to the top of the NACC standings in 2017 and 2018, winning both the regular-season and tournament titles in consecutive seasons. After sharing the championship in 2017, the Falcons captured the 2018 regular-season title outright and capped their tournament run with four consecutive 5-0 victories. The team finished as the conference runner-up in 2019 and consistently remained among the top programs in the conference.
In recognition of his success, Anschutz was named NACC Coach of the Year six times — five times on the women's side in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023, and once on the men's side in 2018.
Anschutz coached 40 All-NACC singles players and 23 All-NACC doubles teams on the women's side, along with 28 All-NACC singles players and 19 All-NACC doubles teams for the men.
"We are thankful for Steve's service to Concordia and his decorated career over the past 15 years," said Interim Director of Athletics Stacey Brunner-Jones. "The numerous championships and his dedication to our tennis program will always be remembered and appreciated. We wish Steve all the best in his future endeavors."
A proud CUW alumnus, Anschutz also enjoyed an outstanding playing career with the Falcons. He helped lead the program to three consecutive NAC regular-season and tournament titles, finishing his career with a 67-39 singles record, including a 25-1 mark in NAC competition, and a 63-44 doubles record, including a 24-3 NAC record.
