GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's tennis team secured another key Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) victory on Saturday afternoon at St. Norbert. The Falcons remained undefeated with a 4-3 victory over the Green Knights to improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NACC. The Green Knights fell to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Freshman Samantha Behling (Brookfield, Wis.) and senior Payton Steward (Appleton, Wis.) sank the Green Knights at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 victory.
Sophomore Abigail Haley (Frohna, Mo.) and sophomore Taylor Weiner (Bakersfield, Calif.) followed suit with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Jordin Popp (Manitowoc, Wis.) and freshman Taylor Peterson (Manitowoc, Wis.) completed the doubles sweep at the No. 1 position. The Falcon freshmen prevailed in an 8-6 tiebreaker to secure the 7-6 victory.
Popp carried the momentum into singles play and quickly downed Jordan Domnick at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
The Green Knights responded with victories at No. 5 and No. 3 singles to keep the match within reach.
After dropping the opening set, Haley mowed down Irene Multhauf at No. 4 singles. Haley battled back to take the second set, 7-5, before finishing off the comeback with a 6-3 victory in the third set.
With the Falcons one point away from victory, junior Katelyn de Guzman (Belvidere, Ill.) delivered the clincher. After dropping a first-set tiebreaker, de Guzman mopped up Molly Merrill in the final two sets to secure a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-0 comeback victory and clinch the match for Concordia Wisconsin.
The Green and Gold claimed the final point at No. 2 singles, but the Falcons had already grounded the Green Knights.
The Falcons will take their talents to Minnesota next weekend to compete at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
