Mequon
Non-conference opponent Carthage (3-0) piled up 590 yards of
offense (420 thru the airways) in the process of handling host
Concordia (0-3) 51-3 Saturday afternoon in Mequon.
After holding the Falcons to a 3 play/ punt first possession,
the visitors settled for an impressive 52 yard field goal by Tyler
Funk on their first drive, but then added a pair of long TD passes
of 46 and 63 yards before the initial quarter ended to make it 17-0
after just 15 minutes of action; holding Concordia without a single
first down in the process.
Carthage quarterback Evan Jones completed 21 of 38 aerial
attempts for 428 yards and 4 touchdowns over the first three
quarters.
CUW, conversely, had only 85 yards of offense for the entire
game with the Falcon points coming on a second quarter Dan Winsey
field goal that temporarily cut the deficit to 17-3 with less than
four minutes remaining until halftime.
It was at that point that the Red Men appeared to break Falcon
resolve by coming right back with a TD drive prior to halftime to
make it 24-3 at the break.
Tim Rucks' team added insult to injury with 27 more second half
points, including a pair of Funk field goals to make for the final
51-3 margin.
Reserve quarterback Patrick Czerwiek was a bright spot for Greg
Etter's troops as he completed 8 of 14 passes for 60 yards and had
a couple of other quality throws dropped.
Zac Wielepski topped the CUW tackle charts with 9 solos and a
pair of assists. Falcon football has experienced only one losing
season since 1985. CUW (0-3) has a welcome bye week before hosting
Rockford on October 2 to open the NAC season.
