Falcons Test Themselves Against Deep Field at North Central Invite

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Concordia Wisconsin wrestling team competed at the 61st Annual North Central College Invitational on Saturday. Facing a 17-team field, the Falcons finished 13th with 22.5 points, while Augsburg claimed the team title.
 
Senior Ruben Vasquez (Westminster, Calif.) led the way for CUW at 197 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Vasquez opened his day against Henry Christensen of Coe College. The senior took control in the second period, scoring 12 points before pinning Christensen in the third. Vasquez fell in the quarterfinals to Josh Negron of Castleton by major decision but responded with a pin over Hadyn Ball of Wabash to secure a placement. Despite two losses to close out the tournament, Vasquez placed sixth and earned six points for the Falcons.
 
At heavyweight, freshman Samuel Smith (Houston, Texas) and sophomore KeiKei Evans (San Antonio, Texas) both battled back after opening-round losses. Evans rebounded with three straight consolation wins, beginning with a pin over Justin Kephart of Olivet. His additional victories came via medical forfeit and default before his run ended with a narrow 4–2 decision loss to Will Erbeck of North Central in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.
 
Smith also found success in the consolation rounds, recording back-to-back pins over George Pavlenko of Elmhurst and Chris Gielow of Carthage. His tournament came to a close with a loss to Keonta Crawford of Castleton.
 
Freshman Kyle Sorenson (Union Grove, Wis.) competed at 184 pounds and opened his day with a 14–6 major decision victory over Jeremy Olson of Illinois Wesleyan.
 
At 133 pounds, sophomore Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) went 1–2 on the day. After dropping his opening bout by major decision, Martinez responded with a first-period pin over Marquan Godfrey of Joliet Junior College in the consolation bracket. His day ended with a 14–7 decision loss to Tyler Evitts.
 
Senior Frank Budederi (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman Reese Elliott (San Jacinto, Calif.) competed at 149 pounds but were unable to secure a win. Elijah Torres (125), Tyson Skubal (157), Tylan Watts (174), and Octavio Singh (285) also competed for the Falcons.
 
Concordia Wisconsin will have a quick turnaround as it travels west for its final tournament of 2025. The Falcons will compete at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nev., taking part in three duals at the Flamingo Hotel. Opponents and start times will be announced at a later date.
