Wrestling Competes at CCIW Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin wrestling team competed at the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships on Saturday. The Falcons placed 10th with 22 points. Carthage hosted this year's event, with North Central claiming the conference title. Freshman Noah Henderson (Hartland, Wis.) was named a recipent of the CCIW's RESPECT AWARD at the conclusion of the event. 

Freshman Ben Kaus (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led CUW with a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Kaus pinned Elmhurst's Sammy Mendez at the 2:20 mark to open his day. He then faced Aurora's Ashton Massaro—whom he had defeated earlier this season—but fell by a 7–3 decision. Kaus rebounded with another pin, this time at 3:38 against Carthage, before dropping an 11–4 decision to North Central's Tyler Starr.
 
Kaus closed his tournament in the fifth-place match with a dominant 17–0 technical fall over Augustana's Trevion Gilford at 6:52.
 
Sophomore Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) represented CUW at 133 pounds. After a first-round bye, Martinez fell by technical fall to North Central's Ethan Spacht in his opening bout. He responded with back-to-back wins, pinning Augustana's Tyson Bruce at 4:35 and earning a 9–4 decision over Carthage's Evan Glowinski. Martinez then dropped a 10–2 major decision to Illinois Wesleyan's Tyson Zvonar but still advanced to the fifth-place match. He was defeated 12–0 by Millikin's Charlie Armstrong to place sixth.
 
Senior Ruben Vasquez competed at 285 pounds. Vasquez opened with a 12–9 decision over Elmhurst's Mike Milovich before falling in his next two matches.
 
Senior Dawson Galvan (Chula Vista, Calif. - 174), and freshmen Hunter Burr (Cudhay, Wis. - 165), Tyson Skubal (Menoqua, Wis. - 157), Kyle Sorenson (Union Grove, Wis. - 184), and Elijah Torres (Chicago, Ill. - 125) also competed for the Falcons.
 
CUW now turns its attention to the NCAA Region VII Championships, scheduled for Feb. 27–28 and hosted by UW–Eau Claire.
