Martinez Secures Day-Two Berth at NCAA Regional

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin wrestling team opened competition Thursday at the NCAA Division III Regional No. 7, hosted by UW-Eau Claire. Sixteen teams are competing at the regional, with action continuing Friday at McPhee Gymnasium.
 
Sophomore Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) advanced through the opening day at 133 pounds. He began with a first-period fall over Garrett Head (Pacific University) at 2:03. Martinez then dropped a championship second-round match by fall to Chance Suddeth (Augsburg University).
 
In the consolation bracket, Martinez earned a 15-0 technical fall against Connor McDonald (Pacific), recording two takedowns, a four-point nearfall, a two-point nearfall, and riding-time bonus. The victory secured his spot in Friday's competition.
 
Freshman Ben Kaus (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) opened at 149 with a loss by fall to Matt Randolph (Augsburg). He rebounded with a 25-second pin of Christian Mardock (Pacific) in the consolation bracket—his fastest fall of the season—before falling by pin to Landon Church (UW-Eau Claire) to conclude his tournament.
 
Senior Ruben Vasquez (Westminster, Calif.) dropped his opening bout by fall to Jackson Kirsh (UW-Platteville). He responded with a 6-1 decision over Teke Nieto (Augustana University), using takedowns in the first and third periods. Vasquez then fell 8-2 to Mason Swanson (Concordia-Moorhead) in his final match of the day.
 
Senior Dawson Galvan (Chula Vista, Calif.-174), and freshmen Hunter Burr (Cudahy, Wis.-165), Noah Henderson (Hartland, Wis.-141), Tyson Skubal (Menoqua, Wis.-157), Elijah Torres (Chicago, Ill.-125), and Tylan Watts (New Orleans, La.-184) each dropped two matches and were eliminated from competition.
 
Thursday marked the final collegiate matches for seniors Vasquez and Galvan.
 
Action resumes Friday at 10 a.m. in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
