MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin wrestling team competed at the MSOE Invite on Saturday, placing 11th overall with 39.5 points. The 17-team field included CCIW opponents MSOE, Carthage, and Lakeland. Augsburg captured the team title with 158.5 points.
Senior
Ruben Vasquez (Westminster, Calif.) led the Falcons with a fourth-place finish at 197 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Vasquez opened his day with a pin over Lakeland's Logan Schwinger. He then fell to Jackson Peak of UW-Eau Claire but rebounded with back-to-back pins against Harper's Michael Marevick and Stevens Tech's Cole Grenier. Vasquez met Peak again in the consolation semifinals, where he battled through a full match but ultimately dropped a 7-2 decision.
At 133 pounds, sophomore
Anastacio Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned a fifth-place finish for CUW. Following a first-round bye, Martinez defeated Estaban Delgado (Harper) by major decision, 12-3. He fell to St. John's (Minn.) Connor Kruger before bouncing back with a 5-0 decision over Nick Jenkins. After a loss to Cornell's Truman Folkers, Martinez ended his day on a high note, pinning Harper's Sam Sirkorski to secure fifth.
Freshman
Ben Kaus (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) finished 3-3 at 149 pounds. He opened with a dominant 16-0 tech fall over Cornell's Nate Wood, later adding a 10-5 decision against Carson Smith (Lakeland) and a pin against Michael Hodge (Harper).
At 184 pounds, senior
Dawson Galvan (Chula Vista, Calif.) and freshman
Kyle Sorenson (Union Grove, Wis.) each picked up wins. Galvan earned a pin over MSOE's Colin Duren. Sorenson opened with a 21-5 tech fall over Duren before suffering two losses by fall.
In the heavyweight bracket, sophomore
KeiKei Evans (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman
Samuel Smith (Houston, Texas) each recorded victories. Evans pinned Brodie Driessen before dropping his next two matches. Smith collected a quick pin against Eureka's Weston Swise (0:55) and finished the day 1-2.
Freshmen
Tylan Watts (New Orleans, La.) and
Tyson Skubal (Menoqua, Wis.) each went 0-2 in their respective brackets.
The Falcons return to action next Saturday at the 61st Annual North Central College Invitational. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Res/Rec Center in Naperville, Ill.
