MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin baseball team dropped its home opener to Carthage on Tuesday evening, falling 13-0 at Kapco Park. The game marked the Falcons' final non-conference contest of the season as they head into the remainder of NACC play with a 6-10 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference action.
With the win, the Firebirds extended their advantage in the all-time series to 15-8 and have now won three straight against the Falcons.
CUW utilized a pitching-by-committee approach, sending a new pitcher to the mound each inning. Sophomore
Ethan Roewe (Washington, Mo.) made his first appearance and start in a Falcon uniform, while
Ben Jimenez (So. – Waukesha, Wis.),
Lucas Kearney (Jr. – Tinley Park, Ill.),
David Russ (Sr. – Round Lake, Ill.),
Danny Smith (Jr. - Queen Creek, Ariz.),
Lucas Wirth (Fr. – Mequon, Wis.), and
Noah Long (So. – Pewaukee, Wis.) also saw time on the mound. The group combined for eight strikeouts against Carthage.
Offensively, the Falcons were limited to five hits. Senior
Alex Ames (Plymouth, Wis.) led CUW with two hits, while freshman
Joe Landgraf (Hartford, Wis.), senior
Tyler Murray (Kankakee, Ill.), and sophomore
Colyn Lessila (Germantown, Wis.) each recorded one.
Concordia had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Falcons loaded the bases. Freshman
Dylan Hein (Dyer, Ind.) drew a walk before back-to-back singles from Murray and Lessila filled the bases, but the Firebirds were able to escape the jam. CUW threatened again in the fifth with runners on the corners, but Carthage once again held the Falcons scoreless.
The Falcons return to Kapco Park this weekend to host Lakeland in a NACC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon, with game two set to begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the opener.
