MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin men's cross country team delivered a memorable 2024 campaign, placing fourth in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, earning a team title at the Wisconsin Private College Championships, and sending a runner to the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time in over a decade.
The season began with a sixth place finish at the St. Norbert Tom Berry Invite, where senior Timmy Brey (Cedarburg, Wis.) led all NCAA Division III runners and placed sixth overall in 19:33.16. He followed with a runner up finish at the Ken Weidt Classic, running 25:49.0 on CUW's home course. Sophomores Isaiah Lubner (Campbellsport, Wis.) and Mason Everts (Saukville, Wis.) made key strides, and freshman Jonah Slavik (Muskego, Wis.) impressed early in the lineup.
On October 4, the Falcons tested themselves against a national field at the Rose Hulman Pre Nationals Night Meet, finishing 38th overall. Brey led the team in 25:22.9, while Lubner, Slavik, and junior Preston Meier (Owatonna, Minn.) helped anchor the scoring.
Midseason momentum peaked at the Wisconsin Private College Championships, where CUW posted five runners in the top 15 and claimed the team title with a dominant 29 point showing. Brey won the individual crown in 25:52.1, Lubner placed third, and Slavik, Meier, and Everts secured top 15 finishes in a performance that marked CUW's first meet title since 2019.
The Falcons turned in a strong effort at the NACC Championships, finishing fourth overall with All NACC performances from Brey in second place (25:18.26) and Lubner in tenth (26:21.09). CUW then placed 19th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III North Regional, highlighted by Brey's All Region finish in 16th with a personal best of 24:59.8. That race earned him an at large bid to the NCAA Championships, becoming the first Falcon to qualify since 2010.
At nationals in Terre Haute, Brey capped his standout season with a 110th place finish in 25:15.4. He became just the fourth CUW men's runner to compete at the NCAA Championships, joining Micah Lorenzen in 2006 and 2007 and Andy Ashenden in 2010.
Off the course, the Falcons upheld their strong academic tradition with a team GPA of 3.58, earning USTFCCCA All Academic Team honors. CUW continues to be one of the top academic programs in the country, having led the nation in GPA two seasons ago.
With individual accolades, a return to the national stage, and continued academic excellence, the 2024 season marked a major step forward for CUW men's cross country and set the tone for a promising 2025.
